Spotlight on Transit Education

How old were you when you started taking transit by yourself? How did you know what to do? While some of us may have adults to guide us, other young people don’t. That’s where Metro’s Transit Education program comes in.

We teach students how to ride transit confidently. That means everything from planning a trip to being a considerate rider. We’ve visited over 150 classes this school year, from history students at Auburn High School to science students at Hamilton Middle School. As one teacher said: “It’s so important to share this info with our students so they can be confident exploring their world.”

We’ve reached over 2,000 students this school year, and we’re not done! Request a workshop for your class.

Metro Transit Night at Highline High School

It may have been April Fool’s Day, but this event was no joke! Metro staff attended the Varsity Boys’ Soccer game at Highline High School on April 1. This was the finale of a 4-week campaign to promote free youth transit to the Highline community.

Attendees completed activities like voting for the best seat on the bus and finding the closest bus stop to their home. Those who completed all activities enjoyed cookies from a Burien bakery and Metro swag.

Thank you to Highline High School and Highline Public Schools staff who made this partnership possible!

Redmond Link opens May 10

We’re counting down the days until the Sound Transit Link 2 Line extends to Marymoor Village with two new stations. Learn about all the fun places you can go. Or join Move Redmond for their Trails to Transit celebration on May 10.

Reminder: Metro fare inspection

On March 31, 2025, Metro began asking riders for proof of fare payment. Youth ride for free and can present their tapped Youth ORCA card. If they don’t have a Youth ORCA card, they’ll receive information on how to get one. Youth ride for free and will never receive a fine.

Have a question or comment about Metro’s fare enforcement and youth? Contact Metro’s Safety, Security, and Fare Enforcement Reform team: rhosogi@kingcounty.gov. Need a Youth ORCA card? Order it for free online at FreeYouthTransitPass.com

Metro in the community

Last month, Metro staff joined student environmental leaders from high schools across the region at the YMCA Earth Service Corps Environmental Symposium. At our workshop, students learned tactics to encourage people to change their behavior to help the community. Students applied these ideas to their own topics of interest, from lunchtime waste sorting to discouraging vaping.
