As early as March 20, crews will be working on sections of the I-90 Trail to repair pipes along the trail. Crews will begin by potholing areas along the trail before starting pipe repair work.
I-90 Trail Closure:
Crews will be working in multiple areas at a time. To safely complete this work, the I-90 Trail will be closed between Island Crest Way and Shorewood Drive and between Fortuna Drive and Southeast 35th Street. While the trail is closed, please follow the posted trail detour routes.
Detours:
During this work, pedestrians will be detoured along a temporary gravel path on North Mercer Way and sidewalks on 84th Ave S.E. and S.E. 26th St. Cyclists will be detoured to merge with traffic along N. Mercer Way and 84th Ave S.E. and S.E. 26th St. Both cyclists and pedestrians will be able to rejoin the I-90 Trail in areas where it remains open. See map below for more details. Please follow all detour signs and travel slowly around the work area.
Please follow marked detours and signs. Drivers should use extreme caution while traveling through this area.
Map of work areas with pedestrian and bike detours. Sections of the I-90 Trail will be closed for pipe repair work from the intersection of Island Crest Way and S.E. 26th St to Shorewood Dr. and from S.E. 35th St to Fortuna Dr. The section of the trail between S.E. 35th St and S.E. 35th Pl will remain closed for ongoing sewer pipe upgrade work in other project work areas. Why is repair work needed?
Testing the pipe ensures the newly installed conveyance system operates as planned. Pipe testing revealed an issue that needs repairs. Crews are repairing the pipe to make sure the system operates correctly and safely to ensure reliable sewer service for your community.
We understand that these detours are inconvenient. We appreciate your patience as we work to complete construction as safely as possible. If you have questions about access, please call our construction hotline at 425-305-3578.
Plans for final restoration
When pipe repairs are complete, crews will backfill the trail and temporarily restore the surface where the pipe was installed. Then, crews will restore all disturbed areas based on permit conditions agreed upon with the City of Mercer Island. Final paving is weather dependent and will take place during the next permitted paving window, which begins in the spring.
