Washington Trivia (Answer is at the bottom) When we raised the money to recognize the sacrifices of Gold Star families, I had hoped it would be meaningful to local families. Last week, I was honored to share time with Jane and Bob Hughes and Roberta and Mike Kelly, both of whom had daughters who served in uniform. RIP SSG Danielle (Hughes) Crone and Major Barbara Kerrana. Your country mourns your loss and recognizes your ultimate sacrifice and its impact on your families.
2025 Property Tax Details Now Available Property owners in King County can now access their 2025 property tax information online. You can view details, make payments, search for property information, and enroll in email or text reminders. Hard copies of property tax statements were sent out on February 14 to individuals who pay their taxes directly rather than through a mortgage lender. A paper statement is not needed to pay property taxes. The deadline for first-half payments is April 30. Payments can be processed online, via mail, or through a drop box. You may reach customer service representatives on weekdays between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm by emailing propertytax.customerservice@kingcounty.gov or calling 206-263-2890. For information on tax exemption and deferral programs for seniors, people with disabilities, or other qualifying conditions, visit the King County Assessor's Office website, call 206-296-3920, or email exemptions.assessments@kingcounty.gov.
King County International Airport Noise Study Community members are invited to attend an upcoming open house on Thursday, March 20, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, at the King County International Airport-Boeing Field (Flight Service Station, 6526 Ellis Avenue S) about the airport's Vision 2045 Airport Plan and Part 150 Study. Learn about the airport's draft noise exposure maps and provide input on the maps and the noise compatibility program that will identify actions to reduce airport noise and promote compatible land uses near the airport. Attendees will also be able to meet with project team members and ask questions about the study and the Vision 2045 Airport Plan. For questions and requests for accommodation at the open house, you may call 206-296-7380 or email KCIACommunityOutreach@kingcounty.gov.

Girl Scout Cookie Season Do you have a favorite Girl Scout Cookie? It is never too late to buy GOOD cookies and support a GREAT cause!! Not only does the income from the sale of Girl Scout Cookies stay local, but the money helps underwrite programs to let girls consider vocations to the White House or to the moon.
Best Starts for Kids Funding Opportunity Best Starts for Kids is now accepting applications for the Youth Development Request for Proposals (RFP). This RFP seeks organizations that offer programs to develop youth leadership and engagement opportunities, mentoring, positive identity, and/or healthy and safe relationships. The deadline to submit applications is on Tuesday, April 15, at 2:00 PM. For more information, email Cherish Cronmiller at ccronmil@kingcounty.gov or click here.
Animal Services Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC) needs more dog foster parents, especially people who are skilled at handling dogs with behavior issues. Fostering is a great way to involve the whole family or household in volunteering. RASKC provides food, supplies, and veterinary care while the animals are being fostered. If you’re interested in volunteering, get more information and complete the online new volunteer orientation. For more information, visit RASKC’s Volunteer Program page and click “Getting Started.”
Federal Way Kiwanis Club Volunteerism is alive and well in our region. Last week, I had the opportunity to speak with members at the Federal Way Kiwanis Club meeting, where we discussed essential topics such as public safety, health, and transportation needs in South King County (SKC). Many positive developments in SKC can be attributed to organizations like the Soroptimists, Lions, Rotarians, Kiwanians, and other volunteer-driven clubs. Special thanks to Linda Persha, Mike, and Karen Brugato for their efforts in implementing a program to recycle used glasses for those in need.

Federal Way Senior Center Age is but a number!!! It was great to visit Shelley Puariea at the Federal Way Senior Center, where many in our community gather to stay engaged and active! Shelley does a great job, and I was pleased to present her with a King County Grant to help keep seniors active! Better to wear out than rust out!

With best wishes, On March 6, 1918, Helen Agnes Naismith, an alum of the University of Washington, joined 32 other members of the Signal Corps Female Telephone Operators (Unit 1) as they boarded the troopship Celtic en route to France for military service in World War I. Known as the “Hello Girls,” these women of the Army Signal Corps managed the telephone system for the American Expeditionary Forces during and after combat in World War I. General John J. Pershing established this American telephone system, which was designed to be operated by American women proficient in French. Although the women were enlisted in the army and subject to military rules and regulations, they were denied veteran status following the war. Merle Egan Anderson, a Signal Corps Female Telephone Operator from Seattle, spearheaded a 50-year campaign for recognition of these women as veterans. Ultimately, in 1979, the surviving World War I telephone operators received official honorable discharges acknowledging their military service. Ceremonies held nationwide celebrated their hard-won recognition as veterans. In Washington, surviving women telephone operators were invited to Fort Lawton in Seattle to receive their official honorable discharges. On August 28, 1979, three beaming World War I telephone operators—Merle Egan Anderson, Marjorie McKillop, and Alma Hawkins—were presented with their papers. Brigadier General Edward L. Trobaugh, assistant division commander of the 9th Infantry Division from Fort Lewis, awarded the documents that finally validated the operators' service.
