Your Weekly Update on What's Happening at the King County Council

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Earlier this week, I was pleased to join my colleagues in proclaiming February 19th as the Day of Remembrance of Japanese American Incarceration.

In 1942, over 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry, the majority of whom were American citizens, were unlawfully incarcerated. Nearly 9,000 of them lived here in King County.

Day of Remembrance

The King County Council presents the proclamation to Irene Yamamoto, Board Treasurer of Densho, and Stan Shikuma, Vice President of Seattle Japanese American Citizens.

As we recognize this Day of Remembrance and reflect on the injustices committed against our Japanese American neighbors, we do so with a spirit of unity so that we can move forward as a community and never again repeat our past mistakes. Thank you to Councilmember Rod Dembowski and Councilmember Girmay Zahilay for bringing this proclamation forward.

All my best,
