Major construction on King County's Coal Creek project begins in 2025!
King County Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) is sharing the news that another clean water project will begin construction in 2025!
If you are receiving this information, you are already signed up for our Coal Creek Sewer Upgrade email list. Please share with your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and community groups who may be affected by construction.
What’s happening?
King County recently awarded the construction contract for the Coal Creek Sewer Upgrade Project to Michels Trenchless Inc.
This multi-year wastewater project will upgrade the existing pipeline to meet needs of growing Bellevue and Newcastle communities. Michels Trenchless will install about 10,800 feet of pipe to build the new Coal Creek Trunk Sewer and re-establish connections to the City of Bellevue’s sewer system. That’s about 2 miles or 3.3 kilometers of pipe in total!
The contractor will relocate most of the new sewer pipe away from the banks of Coal Creek. After the pipe work is completed, they will restore the Natural Area to protect the creek, trails, and remaining infrastructure. The rebuilt Red Cedar Trailhead will retain the same look and feel while enhancing accessibility for visitors of all abilities.
What are the impacts?
During construction, community members and visitors will experience the following impacts:
- Traffic: traffic impacts to Coal Creek Parkway
- Noise: noise around the construction sites.
- Trailhead closure: when the Red Cedar Trailhead closes for at least three years, visitors will need to detour around the construction area.
What’s next?
Michels Trenchless will submit a construction schedule of work activities to WTD’s construction management team. We expect the schedule to be reviewed and approved in the next 1-2 months. When it is final, we will share details with you.
Sewer construction is a lot like home remodeling on a very large scale, and factors outside our control may require the project to adapt. Schedules can change.
King County knows that construction can cause disruptions in project communities. We are committed to working with you throughout the Coal Creek Sewer Upgrade Project. We will be reaching out to find the best ways to keep you informed during construction. We will let you know about major activities in advance and keep the community up to date on progress. We will be here for you every step of the way.
Watch for updates as the County’s contractor comes on board and develops construction plans for the coming years.
