Crews are currently repairing pipe on 78th Ave S.E. between Southeast 22nd Place and Southeast 24th Street. Crews need to continue working in this area through early 2025. This is necessary as crews work around existing utilities and make sure that recently installed pipe is not damaged as part of this work.
Single lane traffic and traffic control signals on 78th Ave S.E.
During this work, single-lane traffic and temporary traffic control signals remain in place on 78th Ave S.E. 24/7, both during and after work hours. This is to maintain public and crew safety during construction. Signals are located on both sides of the active work zone. Vehicles traveling on 78th Ave S.E. may experience wait times of up to 15 minutes at these signals. During working hours, crews are also on site to assist traffic.
In addition, driveway assistance devices installed at the end of driveways on 78th Ave S.E remain in place to maintain safe access around the work area for residents. Access to homes will be maintained, but it may take crews up to 15 minutes to set up a safe surface for you to cross.

As construction continues on 78th Ave S.E., temporary traffic control signals are in place to safely direct traffic through the work area.
Intersection closure planned
As work on 78th Ave S.E. progresses, the intersection at 78th Ave S.E. and S.E. 24th St will need to be temporarily closed for construction. During the closure, traffic will detour on S.E. 22nd Pl and 80th Ave S.E. We will send a notice with more details and update the project website once this is scheduled.
Why are pipe repairs needed?
Testing the pipe ensures the newly installed conveyance system operates as planned. Pipe testing revealed an issue that needs a repair. Crews are repairing the pipe to make sure the system operates correctly and safely to ensure reliable sewer service for your community. This work involves a construction method called open-cut trenching. During open-cut construction, crews sawcut the roadway’s surface, remove asphalt, and dig down to the pipe.
Plans for final restoration
When repairs are complete, crews will backfill the roadway and temporarily restore the roadway surface where the pipe was installed. Then, crews will restore all disturbed areas based on permit conditions agreed upon with the City of Mercer Island. Final paving is weather dependent and will take place during the next permitted paving window, which begins in the spring.
