Your Weekly Update on What's Happening at the King County Council

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

In the wake of disturbing criminal attempts earlier this week to destroy ballots in Vancouver and Portland, I immediately sent a letter to King County Elections Director Julie Wise and King County Sheriff Patti Cole-Tindall to request that steps be taken to assure the public that ballot boxes in King County are safe places to cast their vote. Attacks on our election system have no place in Washington State, and no place in the United States of America.

I am happy to report that here in King County, ballot drop boxes are equipped with fire stops that can extinguish a fire inside the box. Furthermore, each ballot box is 1,000 pounds and bolted into concrete. King County Elections has also increased the emptying of the ballot boxes from once daily to twice daily, and is in regular coordination in with local law enforcement, including the King County Sheriff's Office, emergency management officials, and staff from federal agencies monitoring threats.

Remember, if you see anything concerning at a ballot box, please call 911. To ensure your vote is counted, don't forget to track your ballot through the King County Elections website.

The right to vote is fundamental to our representative democracy, and I thank King County Elections for staying vigilant to protect the security of our elections.

All my best,
