On a brisk Halloween afternoon, the PTA of Ella Baker Elementary School eagerly set the stage for the annual Trunk or Treat event. The school parking lot quickly transformed into a festive haunt of decorated car trunks brimming with candy, spooky decorations, lights, and Halloween-themed music.
Among the many participants, Deputy Chad Ridout and Deputy
Mark Walker-Rittgers made quite an impression. They arrived in their patrol cars, and handed out Junior Deputy stickers, Sheriff’s frisbees, and other swag, but also took the time to engage with the community, chatting with parents, and making the kids laugh with their antics.
As the afternoon proceeded, and raindrops began to fall, their patrol cars’ lights twinkled like beacons in the waning light of dusk. The children’s laughter echoed in the crisp air, mixing with the hum of cheerful conversations. The deputies joined in games, like throwing sheriff’s frisbees with the kids.
By the end of the afternoon, the Trunk or Treat event was hailed as a fantastic success, thanks to the deputies’ lively participation and community spirit. Their presence added a layer of warmth and safety, making the Halloween celebration an unforgettable memory for all involved

Did someone tell you to buy a gift card to pay a fine or bill? Stop. It’s a scam. No real business or government agency will ever tell you to buy a gift card to pay them. Here’s how to spot and avoid gift card scams.
Gift card scams start with a call, text, email, or social media message. The person contacting you is, they say, from the government or a company you know. (They’re not.) They say to pay right away or something terrible will happen. (It won’t.)
Scammers rush you because they don’t want you to have time to think about what they say or talk to someone you trust. The scammer will tell you which gift cards to buy and where to buy them. Sometimes, they’ll stay on the phone with you while you go to the store and load money onto the card. They want you to think they’re helping you. (They’re not.) Once you add money to the card and give scammers the gift card number, your money is gone. If you get a call like this, hang up the phone.
If you bought a gift card and gave someone the numbers off the back of the card:
- Report the gift card scam to the gift card company right away. No matter how long ago the scam happened, report it. Use the How To Contact Gift Card Companies list to report it. It helps to have the gift card and store receipt handy, if possible.
- Ask for your money back. Some companies are helping stop gift card scams and might give your money back. It’s worth asking.
- Tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Your report makes a difference and helps protect your community from fraud and scams.

Many drivers want their heater to fully kick on before heading to work, or often they think the car runs better once it's warmed up, so they put the keys in the ignition, turn on the engine and head back inside to finish getting ready. Thieves know all about this wintertime practice and will drive around in groups throughout suburban neighborhoods looking for empty idling cars.
Here are some tips to prevent your vehicle from being stolen.
- Don't leave your vehicle running unattended.
- Keep your vehicle parked in a well-lit area or in a garage.
- Don't keep valuables inside your car.
- Keep doors locked and windows rolled up.
