Expect increased noise, vibrations, and detours
As early as October 21, crews will be repairing pipe on 78th Ave S.E. Over the course of this work, crews will be working at the intersection of 78th Ave S.E. and S.E. 22nd St, down 78th Ave S.E., and at the intersection of 78th Ave S.E. and S.E. 24th St. This work is expected to occur through the end of the year. Traffic control will be in place 24/7, both during and after work hours. Please follow instructions from flaggers, traffic control, and signage while traveling through this work area (detour maps below).
Testing the pipe ensures the newly installed conveyance system operates as planned. Pipe testing revealed an issue that needs a repair. Crews are repairing the pipe to make sure the system operates correctly and safely to ensure reliable sewer service for your community. This work will involve a construction method called open-cut trenching. During open-cut construction, crews sawcut the roadway’s surface, remove asphalt, and dig down to the pipe. When pipe repairs are complete, crews will backfill the roadway and temporarily restore the roadway surface where the pipe was installed. Then, crews will restore all disturbed areas based on permit conditions agreed upon with the City of Mercer Island.
Single-lane traffic with flaggers and traffic control signals
During this work there will be single-lane traffic on S.E. 22nd Pl, 78th Ave S.E., and S.E. 24th St near the Mercer Island Park and Ride. When work is at the intersection at 78th Ave S.E. and S.E. 24th St, cars will be detoured on 80th Ave S.E. Pedestrian access will be maintained. Cyclists can dismount and take the pedestrian route or ride along the vehicle detour route. Traffic signals, flaggers and signage will direct traffic through the work areas. Please use caution while driving or cycling on rough roadways and over steel plates.
Access to homes will be maintained. Crews will lay metal plates over open excavations to restore access as needed. It may take crews up to 15 minutes to set up a safe surface for you to cross. In addition, driveways along 78th Ave S.E. will have traffic control signals at the end of each driveway. These signals will maintain one lane of alternating traffic around the work area after permitted work hours. Please follow signals for safe access when travelling through the area. We understand that waiting at these lights can be a temporary inconvenience. We appreciate your patience as we work to complete construction as safely and efficiently as possible. If you have questions or concerns about access, please call the construction hotline at 425-305-3578.
Please travel slowly through the work area and follow all signage, traffic control signals, and directions from crews.
