On Monday, most county offices will be closed to observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day, an opportunity to celebrate and honor the histories, cultures, and future of the Native people who have lived here since time immemorial.
In East King County, you can join the Eastside Native American Education Program (ENAEP) for their Indigenous Peoples’ Day event on Monday, October 14 at 6:30 pm at Lake Washington High School. This event is open to everyone and will feature traditional drumming, powwow dancers, singing, and presentations from students and families.
This week, I led the King County Council in declaring October 2024 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Observed each year in October, we celebrate and educate about a key facet of the disability rights movement: the right to hold a job that you have the skills and talents to do, with the supports and accommodations you need to thrive, in pursuit of full participation, economic self-sufficiency, and independent living.
For over 30 years at King County, we have made it a priority to provide employment opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in integrated work settings, which has evolved into our Supported Employment program. Visit our Disability Services website to hear the stories of a few of our employees, Brandon, Janet, and Ting, to better understand how the program works and the ways it benefits all involved.
Best Starts for Kids, King County's voter-approved initiative to support every child in King County, aims to expand access to high-quality programs and services to launch kids on a path to lifelong health and well-being. Come join the Best Starts Capital Program team at an educational open house to find out about the capital program, which invests in childcare and early learning facilities.
At these open houses, you'll learn about an upcoming round of funding, set to be released in November 2024, that will support the new construction and renovation of early learning and childcare facilities. With $4.7M available, this round of Best Starts Capital funding will focus on projects that serve low-income and BIPOC families who lack access to such facilities.
There will be three open houses:
-
Lake Forest Park Open House: Tuesday, October 22 from 5:30-7:00 pm at Third Place Commons (17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park)
-
Maple Valley Open House: Thursday, October 24 from 5:30-7:00 pm at Maple Valley Community Center (22010 SE 248th St, Maple Valley)
