New solid waste disposal rate supports essential services, investment in climate neutrality
Low income discount increases for qualified individuals
Beginning January 1, 2025, King County's Solid Waste Division will enact a rate adjustment of 10% percent for solid waste disposal, an estimated $0.93 increase to monthly residential curbside collection bills. The new rate was approved unanimously by the King County Council on August 20.
New minimum fees will change to $32.60 per vehicle and $203.81 per ton for self-haul customers. Contract haulers will pay $165.91 per ton, in addition to their fixed annual charge. Yard and wood waste fees will remain the same at $18 for sedans and two-door hatchbacks and a weighted rate of $115 per ton for all other customers. Increased discounts for qualifying low-income customers will also coincide with the change, rising from $16 to $18.
Revenue from the 2025 rate will allow the Solid Waste Division to continue essential services and avoid cuts to vital programs and services, while supporting capital projects and programs crucial to environmental progress on climate change mitigation, recycling and waste reduction efforts.
In addition, the new rate further supports the division's goal of climate neutrality by strengthening commitments to resource recovery and green innovations such as electric trucks, renewable diesel and other low emission technology.
Additional messaging about the new rate to the general public and solid waste facility customers will begin in mid-October and continue through the end of the year.
