Vashon D8 Day - First Stop: Vashon Water Taxi Transit Trip
On a clear day you get some of the best views from the Water Taxi
With the new mid-day Water Taxi service, my team and I wanted to check out what it is like to only use transit to visit Vashon Island from Seattle.
The Bus from the Water Taxi
It's hard not to run into a friendly face every time we step foot onto the island. Nick Bonazza was also making the voyage and sent us on our way as we hopped onto the bus taking us to the center of Vashon's Downtown.
Supporting Vashon with our Councilmanic Grants
From top to bottom: Jason Johnson of Vashon Household, Hillary Emmer from Vashon interfaith council to prevent homelessness & Barbara Powell & Pamela McMahan of St Vincent De Paul.
While on Vashon I took the opportunity to meet with some of the recipients of the councilmanic grants recently awarded including Vashon Household, Vashon Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness and St. Vincent de Paul. These big checks are just a token of our big commitment to investing in the groups and people that are making a real positive impact on the island.
D8 Day White Center & Burien
Clockwise starting in the upper left: Yes! Foundation of White Center, Alimentando Al Pueblo, Highline United Methodist Church and Lake Burien Presyterian Church
My team and I also got the opportunity to visit with folks in White Center and Burien who also received councilmanic grants from my office. Including but not limited to Yes! Foundation of White Center, Alimentando Al Pueblo, Highline United Methodist Church and Lake Burien Presbyterian Church. Getting to see firsthand how these funds are helping support some of these great programs is always a good reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together.
Consejo Counseling and Referral Services
I stopped by Consejo for a tour of one of their facilities which they operate across King County. They provide Behavior Health and Mental Health services to the primarily Spanish speaking community. Their union workforce represented by OPEIU Local 8 and Behavioral Health Apprentices from SEIU Healthcare 1199NW is a great example of organized labor being at the forefront of addressing some of our most pressing care needs. As you know, I care deeply about expanding access to health services of all kinds to all our community members and very excited about Consejo’s new endeavor to provide Primary Care along with Mental Health and Behavioral Health services soon. ¡Mil Gracias!

VSHSL Short Term Engagement Projects Funding Opportunity
The King County Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) is pleased to release this Request for Proposals (RFP) for Short-Term Engagement Projects (SE 9) with funding from the Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy (VSHSL).
VSHSL seeks to fund entities to convene short-term community-building events and activities that provide social engagement opportunities for seniors and individuals from resilient communities in ways that meet their unique cultural needs. The competitively selected projects will be community-led, reflect the populations they serve, and cultivate a sense of belonging for seniors and members of resilient communities who will otherwise be isolated. The short-term nature of these engagement projects allows for several small, time-limited projects to be procured rather than multi-year programs that rely on deep funding.
Available funding: Up to $571,361 in Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy funds. Organizations may apply for small short-term grants at set amounts of $5,000, $10,000, and $15,000 Investment period: Rolling application submission with set closing and review dates throughout the year Questions: Contact Katie Mahoney at kmahoney@kingcounty.gov or 206-477-7349 Applications due: First application due date is August 28, 2024 by 2:00pm Pacific Time
