Heads up: Work in Coal Creek Natural Area beginning mid-July

CoalCreekBanner

Wetland and stream mapping and survey work in Coal Creek Natural Area as early as mid-July

Starting as soon as July 15, crews will be surveying and mapping wetlands and streams in the Coal Creek Natural Area. These activities will help King County document existing conditions and identify wetland boundaries. Crews will be working in or around the creek near the Upper West/Red Cedar Trailhead.

The surveys will help guide the installation of temporary protection around a maintenance hole located along the bank of Coal Creek. The plan and schedule for temporary protection work is still being developed. We will share more information as it becomes available.

Please note that current work at the sediment pond is unrelated to King County's project. The City of Bellevue is carrying out work to clean sediment out of the pond and make room for additional sediment that washes downstream in winter rains.

What to expect:

  • Work is expected to happen between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. during July 15-19.
  • Work will occur in or around the creek, near the Upper West/Red Cedar Trailhead.
  • Crews may remove small amounts of vegetation for access.
  • Crews will place small flags and/or flagging tape while they are performing the work.
  • No trail closures are anticipated for this work.

Why is this work needed?

The existing Coal Creek Trunk Sewer was constructed in the 1960s-70s. The north section was installed along the banks of Coal Creek in what is now the Natural Area. Flood events have exposed the pipe and continue to scour the bank at the base of the maintenance hole. King County previously installed temporary protection for this structure in 2020. Updating the protection area will help protect the maintenance hole and a cherished creek until this structure is removed as part of the Coal Creek Sewer Upgrade Project.

Help keep everyone safe:

All work by King County crews is being done with approved permits and safety plans. Please help keep yourselves and our workers safe by avoiding active work zones and crews in the field. Please contact us by email or phone with your questions. You will find contact information on the next page!

About this project:

This clean-water project will provide additional capacity needed to carry wastewater from Newcastle and part of Bellevue to King County’s South Treatment Plant in Renton. The Coal Creek Sewer Upgrade also provides the opportunity to move much of the active pipe (pipe that’s carrying sewage) away from the creek in the popular Coal Creek Natural Area, a sensitive habitat for spawning salmon.
