Your Weekly Update on What's Happening at the King County Council

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

For years, the notorious Green River encampment has been a source of crime, violence, and environmental hazards—including gunfire, homicide, and blatant drug dealing—in south unincorporated King County. Given the encampments location next to a park frequently used by young children, I have been particularly concerned by its growth and had introduced legislation to clear the encampment and connect the residents with treatment and shelter. Unfortunately, my legislation lapsed and was not approved by the Council.

Despite this lack of legislative success, I have continued to work with the King County Sheriff’s Office and King County Road Services Division to monitor the situation, highlight the ongoing problems, and advocate for solutions. I am pleased to report that the Road Services Division, in partnership with the Sheriff’s Office and homeless service providers, is in its final week of a project to clear the encampment and restore the hillside along Green River Road.

After: Green River Road in June 2024

The cleanup effort consisted of restoring an existing gravel access road, removing 119 tons of trash and debris, pruning bushes and trees, and installing “No Trespass” signs. Outdoor lighting is being installed this week. The homeless individuals living on the hillside were informed of the scheduled clean-up and connected with resources and shelter options. By the start of the project, approximately a dozen individuals had accepted resources including treatment. Going forward, the Road Services Division will continue to partner with the King County Sheriff's Office to patrol the Green River Road area.

I am grateful to the Road Services Division crews and King County Sheriff’s deputies for their ongoing efforts to keep the Green River Road clean and safe for all. This is a big victory for our unincorporated community!

All my best,
