This week, the Law and Justice Committee discussed my motion that would state that it is the intent of the King County Council to keep the county's juvenile detention center open and providing secure detention. My proposal comes amid efforts to close the youth jail and end secure juvenile detention, even for the most dangerous and violent offenders.
My position has always been clear: we need to keep the juvenile detention facility fully operating and stop reaching for the unrealistic goal of closing the jail. Not only will there always be a need to keep the most dangerous offenders behind locked doors, but the longer we contemplate closing the facility, the longer the county contributes to the staffing shortages and morale issues that are detracting from efforts to rehabilitate the youth being held in the jail.
To learn more about this issue, I encourage you to read this article by The Seattle Times Editorial Board: King County voters want secure youth detention; council should listen.
