October 2024
Construction on Alpha Hill starting as early as mid-October
Temporary trail closures around construction area for approximately three months
Alpha Hill itself closed to public access to prevent erosion
Alpha Hill is the large landform that towers over the south trails area at Brightwater. Informal paths on Alpha Hill have caused dirt to get into nearby salmon-bearing streams. This can harm water quality. This project will create a barrier to foot traffic that also benefits wildlife.
New landscaping, rock wall, and fence to protect water quality
King County’s contractors will install landscaping, a rock wall, and a fence on Alpha Hill. Vegetation helps filter runoff into Little Bear Creek. It also provides wildlife habitat and improves drought tolerance. The landscaping needs time to establish, so the plants you see will grow over time. These improvements help control erosion and protect water quality in nearby salmon-bearing streams.
Temporary trail closures during construction
To help keep everyone safe, King County’s contractors will temporarily close a section of trail near Alpha Hill. Please stay on open trails to protect the surrounding landscape. Once construction is complete, this project will not change access to the three miles of maintained trails at Brightwater.
A section of trail in the south trails area will be temporarily closed during construction on Alpha Hill. On the map, that area is shown by the dotted line between the two stop sign icons. Please stay on open trails to protect the surrounding landscape.
If you’re looking for a new hill to climb nearby, check out: Norway Hill in Blyth Park, Hollywood Hill along the Tolt Pipeline Trail, or the Wetland Plateau Trail in the Paradise Valley Conservation Area.
