Summer 2024
Hello and happy June from all of us at the King County Pet Business Program! Read on for more information about:
Warmer weather requires some preparation to keep our pets cool. Here are some tips to keep pets cool in your facility this summer:
- Make sure there is always fresh water available to prevent dehydration.
- Check and refill the water often. Water evaporates from dishes much quicker when it is sunny and hot out.
- Public Health requires that pets being blow dried have access to water to prevent overheating. Always watch pets that are being blow dried.
- Kiddie pools are a great way for dogs to have fun and cool off. Make sure to empty and disinfect the pools at the end of each day to prevent the growth/harborage of microorganisms (such as algae and bacteria) and/or mosquitos.
- Provide shady areas for animals outside to get out of the sun.
- Increase ventilation to allow for extra cooling in facilities without central air.
- Look for signs of heat distress:
- Watch out for hot surfaces if you have outdoor areas. Increase cover and shade in your outdoor spaces on sunny days to prevent injuries.

Earlier this month, we launched a new and improved version of our Pet Business Program website.
Take a look to find:
- Resources and guidance by business/permit type.
- Information for new businesses and how to get started on your permit application.
- How to file a complaint, search for permitted facilities, and request public records.
- Permit suspension notifications.
