On Wednesday, May 29, at 6:00 PM Mercer Island resident Judy Kusakabe will discuss “Behind the Barbed Wire: The Incarceration of Japanese Americans” at the Mercer Island Library, presented by the Mercer Island Historical Society. The incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II is a terrible chapter in our nation’s history that made a lasting and deep impact on our region — 9,600 people of Japanese descent lived in King County and Japanese Americans from Bainbridge Island were the first in the nation to be expelled and incarcerated. We must honor the stories of those who lived through it and learn its lessons so that we do not repeat this pattern of discrimination and injustice.

Last week, the Mercer Island High School girls lacrosse team beat Seattle Prep to win the 3A state championship. These young women fought hard for this win, putting in countless hours of practice and bringing discipline and dedication to the game. Congratulations, Islanders, for bringing home the title and making your community proud!
