Summer's Coming: Got Your Youth ORCA Card?

Free Youth Transit Pass promo; two youth hold up ORCA cards in front of a bus.

As a reminder, transit is free for every youth aged 18 and younger all year long. Using a Youth ORCA card (also known as a Free Youth Transit Pass) is highly encouraged, but not required. Tapping your Youth ORCA card allows transit agencies to better understand how many young people are riding transit, including where and when.

Need a card? Youth aged 13 and older are encouraged to order a free Youth ORCA card by visiting https://www.myorca.com/buy-online/ (the card will automatically be registered when ordered).

Visit FreeYouthTransitPass.com for more information.

What We're Reading

  • Blog: Youth Transportation Summit participants deliver 5 key recommendations to City of Seattle leadership (Seattle Department of Transportation). Last December, 60 students from around the region attended Seattle’s first ever Youth Transportation Summit, hosted by the City of Seattle, King County Metro, and Sound Transit. In January, they delivered their recommendations to Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and other city officials. Participants highlighted the importance of bike and pedestrian infrastructure, transportation education, safety and accessibility, service improvements, and more. You can read the full action plan with more details here (PDF).

  • Blog: How to Get More Students Riding Public Transit (Move Minnesota). In 2023, Move Minnesota launched an initiative to get students comfortable walking, biking, and taking public transit to school. In addition to discussion groups and curriculum modules, students took numerous public transit field trips on both bus and light rail. King County Metro’s transit education curriculum was highlighted as reference for some materials and messaging. With more than 80% of students feeling confident using public transit alone following the program, we are excited to be inspiring behavior change beyond King County – and we’re grateful to learn from our transit peers across the country!
