Announcements & Policy Updates
Stay informed about the policies we are championing, the progress we are making, and the impact we are creating as we work to serve you better.
Championing Transit Safety on MLK Way
Our office is organizing a town hall to address the pedestrian and traffic safety issues linked to the light rail's surface-level path along MLK Way.
This was the top issue we heard about during my Sound Transit community listening sessions. Our Safety Town Hall will convene riders and neighbors to coalesce around short- and long-term strategies for safety improvements.
This event will be on Wednesday, March 20, from 6 pm - 8 pm at the Station Coffee Shop on MLK and Alaska. To RSVP for and stay updated on this town hall, please email carly.pena@kingcounty.gov.
Progress on the Crisis Care Centers Levy
After your strong support for the Crisis Care Centers levy, raising $1.25 billion to bolster mental health and addiction recovery services, I'm excited to share the next steps. The King County Executive transmitted the detailed implementation plan on December 29, 2023. The plan, now under Council review, focuses on building crisis care centers, restoring mental health facilities, and reinforcing the behavioral health workforce. Public engagement is ongoing, with monthly community updates planned every third Tuesday from February to April, 2:30–3:30 pm and 6–7 pm. I encourage everyone to stay engaged in this critical work. Too many people are suffering from mental illness, addiction, and overdose. Let’s build a system that gives everyone a chance to recover and live a healthy life. For more details, visit this website. If you have any questions, please e-mail CCCLevy@kingcounty.gov.
Minimum Wage Ordinance Update
Exciting developments are underway in our office as we refine our strategy to enhance the minimum wage ordinance for unincorporated King County (PO 2023-0310). We're crafting a dynamic amendment that reflects your input and aligns with our shared values. The revised proposal includes an updated hourly minimum wage of $20.29, a new effective date set for January 1, 2025, and asking the Executive to determine the most cost-effective approach to implementation and enforcement of the ordinance. Dive into the details of these changes in the TrEE packet online, with highlights starting on page 33 and a concise summary on page 61. Stay engaged with the process and mark your calendars for the upcoming TrEE committee vote on April 16th. For further insights and updates, visit the TrEE website or connect with us via email at carly.pena@kingcounty.gov. Your voice is integral as we shape a fair and thriving economic landscape in King County.
Addressing the Public Defender Crisis
King County, like many regions nationwide, is grappling with a dire shortage of public defenders, leading to staffing shortages and overwhelming caseloads that contribute to burnout among legal professionals. I have addressed this critical issue, discussing its impact on our justice system and the need for immediate, balanced solutions, in a recent Seattle Times article. Please read more about our perspective and the steps we are advocating for to mitigate this crisis, including King County legislation.
Join Us for the Launch of the Link 2 Line Service
I'm thrilled to share the opening of the Link 2 Line service on April 27, a significant milestone in connecting our region through train service from Seattle to the East Side. With eight stations stretching from South Bellevue to Redmond Technology, this new line marks a leap forward in our commitment to accessible and sustainable transit options. The celebration begins on April 27; we'll gather to commemorate this achievement and enjoy the new service that will shape the future of transportation in King County. For more information, visit the Sound Transit website.

This is your chance to learn about and influence our strategies for fostering employment opportunities and success. Your input is invaluable in shaping this initiative to best support our community members in their employment journeys. Urgent Housing Needs for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in King County
In the heart of our community, hundreds of our neighbors, asylum seekers, and refugees find themselves in dire living conditions, from unheated shelters to temporary accommodations with uncertain futures. The plea for dignified housing and support is loud and clear, with over 1,000 individuals in Seattle and Renton alone facing homelessness or insecure housing.
King County has recently announced $1,000,000 in funding to support these unhoused asylum seekers.
Join us in this critical mission to secure stable housing for groups like those at Riverton Church, Mãos Unidas, Comunidad Sin Fronteras, Movimento Congolese Angolano, and others facing immediate housing challenges. Your contribution, big or small, can make a significant difference.

Seattle & King County Public Health: On-Site Sewage System Code Updates
Seattle and King County are embarking on a vital year-long journey to revise the King County Board of Health on-site sewage system codes. After six months of engaging with partners and informing the community about septic-related changes to the Washington Administrative Codes, they're expanding their outreach with a monthly newsletter starting in January. This newsletter is a crucial resource for understanding state-level changes and contributing to the development of local amendments. I encourage you to engage with this process by reviewing the January newsletter here and signing up for future updates at www.kingcounty.gov/oss/alerts. Your input is crucial as we strive to enhance public health standards and environmental sustainability in King County.
Community Safety and Response: Metro Bus Incident Update
This month, I want to address a concerning incident involving a Route 14 Metro bus on South Jackson Street. In a moment that could have had far more severe consequences, a car unexpectedly cut off the bus, leading to a collision. Thankfully, no injuries were reported among the 25 passengers onboard or at the Skate Like a Girl facility, despite the bus impacting the building. Investigations by Seattle Police and Metro are underway to understand the specifics and prevent future occurrences. I am relieved that everyone is safe and commend the quick response from Metro's Chief of Staff, DeAnna Martin, who is coordinating support for the affected nonprofit organization. It's a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and community solidarity in times of unexpected challenges. For further details on the incident, read this Fox News Article and the updates from Metro.
Celebrating Black History Month with Community Art and Advocacy
The Council proudly proclaimed February 2024 as Black History Month, a time for reflection, education, and celebration of the rich heritage and invaluable contributions of the Black community. We were honored to be joined by Jay Taylor, a talented local artist and esteemed board member of the ONYX Fine Arts Collective. This vital nonprofit organization plays a crucial role in our community, dedicated to educating, inspiring, cultivating, and showcasing the artwork of artists of African descent in the Pacific Northwest. Their work not only enriches our cultural landscape but also fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diverse tapestry that shapes our region.
Atrium Court Groundbreaking
I'm excited to share that right next to the Othello Light Rail Station, an innovative 8-story mixed-income apartment complex, Atrium Court, is set to rise. Joining the groundbreaking ceremony was a moment of pride, marking the beginning of a project that will provide 271 affordable homes for individuals earning 60%-70% of the Area Median Income (AMI), alongside commercial spaces for small businesses. This development is a testament to our commitment to increasing accessible and affordable housing in our community. A big thank you to all the partners involved in making this vision a reality. For more details on Atrium Court and its impact on our neighborhood, please visit here.

I'm grateful to The Seattle Medium for featuring the impactful efforts of our Build the Bench team. Our initiative is dedicated to cultivating civic engagement and leadership among our youth, providing them with the tools and knowledge to effect meaningful change. Your support and participation in these workshops contribute to a brighter, more inclusive future for our community. Read the Seattle Medium article for more information on this vital work.
Reflecting on the Sankofa Theater's Legacy
The closure of the Sankofa Theater, a vital space for Black artists and storytellers in Seattle's Central District, represents a significant loss for our city's Black Arts and Culture scene. Situated at the Inscape Arts Building, the theater was compelled to shut down last September due to financial challenges and pressures from other tenants. While its founder, Teme Wokoma, seeks a new venue, the story of the theater and its key contributors, including the late Elijah L. Lewis, continues to resonate. A documentary produced by Besa Gordan, "Sankofa Theater: Inscape Finale," set to air on Fox13 Seattle and FOX 13+, delves into the theater's history and its impact on many artists. This film, airing on Tuesday, February 27th at 7 PM, shines a light on an essential chapter of our community's artistic narrative.
