Care and Closure

February 2024 Newsletter

A Message from our Care & Closure Team

Care & Closure is King County’s plan for youth healing, accountability, and community safety. The plan outlines recommendations and next actions to expand community-based alternatives to secure youth detention and close the youth detention center. We share updates and upcoming opportunities to be involved in the project each month.

ICYMI – Report with Recommendations & Next Steps

At the end of January, Executive Constantine sent a report on the Care & Closure recommendations from the Advisory Committee and the Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) to the King County Council.

The report highlights the process of developing the recommendations, the findings from the community engagement, and the next actions of the project. Check out the two-page summary and the full report.

Mark Your Calendar – First 2024 Advisory Committee Meeting

As outlined in the recent report, the Executive is reconvening the Advisory Committee, which we are excited do for the first time this year on Monday, March 25 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Moving forward, the Advisory Committee will further deliberate on recommendations 1 and 2 that were initially discussed last year. This will include exploring what the respite and receiving center and very short-term respite housing might look like and how safety for youth, staff, and community can be maintained in those centers.

The Advisory Committee will meet virtually for this first meeting. The meeting is open to the public. Find more information on the project website
