Your Weekly Update on What's Happening at the King County Council

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Last Monday night, a drive by shooting that occurred on I-5 in Tukwila marked the latest in what has been a recent surge in gunfire incidents along freeways and highways in King County, particularly in south King County. I am greatly alarmed by the excessive number of shootings, and on Wednesday sent a letter to Washington State Patrol Chief John R. Batiste to request more information about these incidents and seek any opportunities to partner in combatting this concerning trend. You can read more about my request here

It is my hope that King County will be able to work together with other law enforcement agencies to investigate these gunfire incidents and look into questions such as whether the shootings are isolated incidents or connected incidents, or whether they are random or targeted. In addition, providing the public with more information about the nature of the cases and the ongoing investigation will help raise awareness and make sure folks know that if they see something concerning, they need to report it immediately.

I am grateful to WSP Chief Batiste for his enthusiasm for working with me, and my heart goes out to the trooper who was shot in the line of duty last Friday while serving on an emphasis patrol related to this increase in freeway shootings. My prayers are with him, his family, and his colleagues.

All my best,
