Seattle King County Clinic Tour - Serving those who struggle with access to care
My team and I toured the Seattle King County Clinic this past week and met with healthcare workers who volunteered to help those in the community who are unable to afford regular access to Healthcare including Dental and Vision care. This is the 9th year of the clinic taking place and is a great example of us coming together to take care of each other as a community. South Park Pump Station – Preparing for the next flood
It’s been a little more than a year since the South Park Neighborhood was ravaged by flooding. More than 20 families were displaced, and small business were negatively impacted in the area. I toured the South Park Pump Station which opened in September of last year thanks in part to a 6 million dollar award by the KC Flood District. Right now, there are rows of sandbags protecting homes but we will keep working towards permanent solutions that protect people’s property and also helps support our environment and wildlife such as salmon.
Lummi Nation – Addressing the fentanyl crisis
The plague of addiction is concerning to everyone, and the effects of fentanyl have devastated our community, however the impacts have been even more pronounced for our native populations. Recently, I met with Councilmember Nickolaus Lewis of the Lummi Nation and Chairman of the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board along with Abigail Echo-Hawk, Vice President of Seattle Indian Health Board and Director of the Urban Indian Health Institute, Sara McNally, Public Health Fellow, Youth Council President, Damian Kamkoff, Youth Council Vice President Marc Bogg, and Valencia, Youth Council Coordinator to learn how we can best support their efforts to address what we are seeing happen in a way that is both effective and culturally informed.
Wage Theft Summit – Supporting our workers
I joined with other local leaders including King County Prosecutor Leesa Manion to kick off a summit convened by MLK Labor on Wage Theft. Wage theft is when employers ask workers to work off the clock, work through their breaks or just don’t pay them what they are owed. Billions are stolen each year through wage theft and this means less food on the tables of our working families. I’ll continue working with my colleagues at the County Council and in the community to hold bad actors accountable and put more money in workers’ pockets.
Standing with Flight Attendants
The flight attendants of Alaska Airlines keep us safe when we are up in the air and it isn’t too much to ask that they get a fair contract. I stopped by last week to stand with them in solidarity.

Public Free Access Grants - Cultural Experiences should be for everyone
We’ve got incredible arts and culture in this place we all call home and how much is in your bank account shouldn’t dictate your ability to enjoy and participate in them. 4Culture currently has $300,000 in grants available to expand access through free and reduced cost participation in cultural experiences. Organizations who are interested in applying for these funds can find out more information on the program here: Public Free Access | 4Culture
Deferred Enforcement Departure (DED) For Palestinians – Thank you Rep Jayapal
Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) has successfully pushed the Biden Administration to designate Deferred Enforcement Departure for Palestinians. This means no Palestinian currently in the US will be faced with the horrific possibility of being deported to an active war zone. I commend Rep Jayapal and those others in the House and Senate pushing for peace and diplomacy in this conflict.
