Celebrating MLK Day - Since the Last Teresa Tuesday we celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I took part in the rally at Garfield in Seattle on MLK Day
White Center Food Bank – I got a chance to celebrate the Opening of the new White Center Food bank thanks to the leadership of CM Joe McDermott and State Senator Joe Nguyen.
Unite Here Local 8 is a union that represents workers in our hotels, restaurants and who operate concessions at our stadiums – I stood in solidarity with UniteHere8 members fighting for a first contract at Home Grown along with CM Girmay Zahilay.
SEIU6 Local 6 is a property services union representing Janitors, Security Guards and Airport workers – I had the privilege of swearing in their new Executive Board.
Visit to Vashon
My team and I also got to spend a day on Vashon putting our heads together to learn and work towards solving some of the unique challenges the Island community faces:
Thank you Vashon HouseHold for filling us in on your work building affordable housing on the island.
The Seattle Indian Health Board is doing incredible work with their Thunderbird facility. Once finished with their renovations, this facility will provide much needed services and great jobs on the island.
Meeting with Dr. Nourse was a great opportunity to discuss mobility and accessibility plus so much more.
The challenge many on the island are facing due to the situation with the ferries is very real. We met with the Vashon Chamber & Islanders for Ferry Action to go over the issues and potential solutions like expanding Water Taxi service and King County Metro Transit Shuttles to the Terminal.
I also got to spend time catching up with longtime organizer and friend Alejandra Tres and support a fabulous small business Zamorana and owners Effie and Jorge. The Island is home to a vibrant Latino community and I'm looking forward to working on access to childcare, food, housing and small business support on the Island.
We capped our time on the Island off continuing the tradition of D8 councilmembers swearing in Vashon Health Care District Commissioners.
Board of Health
Last week I was appointed by my colleagues as the Chair of the Board of Health.
Part of my role on the Board of Health is ensuring D8 residents know about local projects that can have a big impact on their health and their lives. Right now, Public Health – Seattle and King County is working on a year-long process to revise the King County Board of Health on-site sewage system codes. Over the past six months, they have engaged partners and shared with community members about septic-related changes to the Washington Administrative Codes.
Now, Public Health is expanding this communication by sharing a monthly newsletter. The newsletter explains changes required at the state level and gather input to develop proposed local changes.
Thank you for signing up for the #TeresaTuesday Newsletter. We will send you regular updates every other week. If you’d like to reach out or have an issue we can help with, please reach out anytime.
Thank you for allowing us to represent you on the King County Council!
