Your Weekly Update on What's Happening at the King County Council

When Fairwood community member Heather Stafford came to me with the idea of starting a nighttime market, I worked to provide a $2,500 Community Service Organization grant, as well as technical support, to help get Fairwood Market Night off the ground. Now in its second year, Fairwood Market Night has grown to be a vibrant and lively event, hosting nearly 80 vendors and food trucks every first Wednesday of the month, May through October.

If you live in the Fairwood area, I encourage you to visit Fairwood Market Night this coming Wednesday, October 4th—the grand finale of Fairwood Market Night for 2023! As the market season draws to a close, I congratulate the event organizers on another successful year.

King County report outlines next steps against hate and bias with hotline implementation

In response to legislation I sponsored to create the Stop Hate Hotline, a community-based alternative to the police for reporting hate crimes, the King County Executive recently released a report on the how the hotline would be designed and established. 

The report provides a detailed plan and roadmap for establishing a Stop Hate Hotline, considering strategies that have been successful in other jurisdictions, as well as pre-existing budgetary and staffing limitations. I will closely track opportunities to allocate the needed funding for the Stop Hate Hotline in the Council's upcoming Second Omnibus Supplemental Budget Amendment deliberations. Accessing naloxone nasal spray in King County

Fatal overdoses rates are at an all-time high in King County. Deaths caused by overdose this year are expected to be at least double those that occurred in 2020. 

Naloxone, a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose, is readily available in King County. Here’s how you can get it :

1. Pharmacies: Naloxone can be purchased over the counter or through medical insurance at most pharmacies.
1. Naloxone has recently been made available over the counter, and major pharmacies like Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, and Rite Aid sell a 2-dose box for around $45.
2. Most pharmacies also offer naloxone at the pharmacy counter without a prescription using Washington's naloxone standing order. Employees can use their medical benefits to cover the cost, but may have a copay. Employees should ask for the generic prescription for a lower co-pay.
3. People enrolled in Apple Health can get the kit for free, without a copay.
