Your Weekly Update on What's Happening at the King County Council

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I recently led the King County Council, in partnership with my colleague Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles, in proclaiming National Recovery Month in King County. During Recovery Month, we raise awareness about mental health and substance use disorders, promote treatment, and celebrate the millions of people who are on their path to recovery.

Recovery Month

The King County Council awards David Coffey, Recovery Cafe with the 2023 King County Recovery Champion Award.

In conjunction with Recovery Month, and for the second year, the Council also presented the 2023 King County Recovery Champion Award to honor a person or organization within King County that has demonstrated hard work and passion in helping those with substance use disorder. This year, we gave the Recovery Champion Award to David Coffey and Recovery Café.

David Coffey, Executive Director of Recovery Café, is a person I personally respect and admire. He was nominated to receive this award by his peers because of his many years of leadership and tireless service in the recovery space. We extend our gratitude to everyone involved with Recovery Café, an exemplary organization that helped countless people in King County find recovery, health, and hope.

As our region continues to see record overdose deaths, Recovery Month is a reminder that treatment works, recovery is possible for all, and help is out there for those who seek recovery. If you are looking for support for a mental health and/or substance use disorder, reach out to SAMHSA's National Helpline, a free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service, at 1-800-662-HELP.

All my best,
