Building partnerships with community-based organizations
Stuart Vazquez of Eco-Lógica teaches a natural gardening class.
The Hazardous Waste Management Program is built on collaboration. Since the beginning, we've operated as a coalition of local government agencies, all with the same shared goal: a healthier and cleaner King County. It's in the spirit of that mission that we are proud to jointly sponsor the Natural Yard Care Program along with Seattle Public Utilities.
This year, Natural Yard Care has been practicing our commitment to collaboration on the community level. They have contracted with several BIPOC organizations and vendors in the King County area, forming vital partnerships to help communities shape culturally-responsive education and outreach about natural gardening and yard care.
One great example is Natural Yard Care's partnership with Eco-Lógica, an organization focused on educating Latino communities about sustainability and the environment in the Puget Sound region. Recently, Eco-Lógica director Stuart Vazquez (in the photo above) taught a natural garden class to a group from Woodbridge Apartments in Burien. With personal insight and expertise, Stuart delivered Natural Yard Care's key messages on chemical-free gardening and the risks associated with arsenic and lead in the dirt.
I'm excited to see the blossoming effects that come from our sponsorship of the Natural Yard Care Program. It demonstrates the power of partnerships on all levels, from government agencies coming together to serve a shared mission, to community leaders and residents bonding over a compassionate commitment to each other's wellness. I'm looking forward to seeing what is possible as we continue to deliver our services through strategic partnerships and supporting healthy communities.
