Deeply Engaged with our Communities!
May 2023
Dear Friend,
Our office has been hard at work to make sure we’re meeting with local leaders and community members in each of our cities and towns. As we work toward policy initiatives in our three focus areas – environmental preservation, behavioral health access, and creative economies – it's important now more than ever to engage and help shape the county's work for years to come.
For instance, we’re working on our Subarea Plan for unincorporated communities in Baring, Carnation, Duvall, Fall City, Grotto, Issaquah, North Bend, Preston, Skykomish, Snoqualmie, North Bend, and Snoqualmie Pass. If you live in one of these areas, make your voice is heard on what you want to see in your community! We will also continue meeting with businesses and non-profits, and hosting Town Halls in our 10 cities and 2 townships. I look forward to seeing you at upcoming community outreach opportunities as we work together on our District 3 priorities!
If you’d like to meet or talk about anything, please reach out by email, sarah.perry@kingcounty.gov, or phone at 206-477-1003, and we’ll find some time to connect!
All the best,
Council Briefings & Actions!
The Council has been working hard this month – here’s the work that matters most to District 3:
-
In our Local Services and Land Use Committee meeting, we got a briefing on work of the Agriculture Commission, which gives the King County agricultural sector the opportunity to take a more active role in the development and evaluation of policies, regulations, and programs that affect the commercial agriculture in our county!
-
At our Full Council meeting, we passed a Fossil Fuel Facility Insurance ordinance which adds financial responsibility requirements for any privately owned fossil fuel facilities and non-hydroelectric facilities in unincorporated King County to ensure we’re protecting our environment.
- At our May Regional Transit Committee meeting, we heard a briefing on King County Metro’s capital partnership toolkit, a comprehensive checklist to support cities in better aligning their transit plans with those of Metro. This checklist provides guidance, examples, and links to resources to help cities integrate transit considerations into their comprehensive planning!

Celebrating May Proclamations and Holidays!
|
May was a busy month with many celebratory Proclamations in Council along with Holidays across our country! We started off the month by proclaiming May 7th – 13th as Affordable Housing Week in King County along with May 12th as Childcare Provider Appreciation Day, recognizing the essential work of our childcare providers! We then proclaimed May 14th – 20th as Police Week in King County to recognize the work our law enforcement officers do to keep our communities safe. Last week, we proclaimed May as both Treatment Court Month as well as Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, which honors and appreciates the many AANHPI community members across King County! And earlier this week, we took time on Memorial Day to remember the patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice for us, our loved ones, and our nation. With so much going on in the world, it’s important for us to take a step back and reflect on all the good in our communities!
Out in the Community!
(Left): We joined State Senator Mark Mullet (5th LD), Commander Michael Pollina, and American Legion Post 79 in Snoqualmie at Mt. Si High School at their Sno-Valley Veterans Luncheon; (Right): At the Beaver Lake Apiary and Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary in Sammamish with host Kim Stanley.
(Left): Visited SecondStory Repertory Theater in Redmond with Artistic Director Mark Chenovick on the set of their latest production, Sunday in the Park with George; (Right) Joined the Snoqualmie Indian Tribe and Eastside Fire & Rescue as we celebrated their partnership and new emergency aid vehicle.
Town Halls across District 3!
We are excited to host an in-person KC D3 Woodinville Town Hall on Thursday, June 1st at 6:30 PM at the Woodinville Library (17105 Avondale Rd NE, Woodinville, WA 98072)! Join us to learn and share as we get to know each other and how we can work together to ensure that Woodinville communities are best positioned to thrive! We will be joined by KC Creative Economies Director, KC Behavioral Health Director, and KC Environmental Preservation Director! Space is limited, so click "Going" on the Facebook event and sign up for the event here so that we have all the needed seats (kiddos welcome)! Questions? Call: 206-507-9860
At our most recent Town Hall, it was wonderful to hear from our Snoqualmie Pass residents at the Silver Fir Lodge. Our guest speakers joined us to talk about creative economies, environmental preservation, and behavioral health initiatives in Snoqualmie Pass and our region. You can watch a recap of that Town Hall here!
Share Your Feedback on the Subarea Plan!
Our King County Department of Local Services (DLS) is working with Snoqualmie Valley and Northeast King County communities to develop a Subarea Plan. This is a 20-year plan that outlines a vision for the community and policies to help achieve that vision. The topics span many subjects, including: land use and zoning, housing and human services, environment, parks and open space, and transportation.
This subarea includes the unincorporated communities in Baring, Carnation, Duvall, Fall City, Grotto, Issaquah, North Bend, Preston, Skykomish, Snoqualmie, North Bend, and Snoqualmie Pass.
From 2021-22, DLS conducted meetings with residents of communities and organizations throughout the area to help get the word out. They have now completed a public review draft for you to review and provide input until July 15. Click here for opportunities to participate and provide feedback if you call one of the communities above home! Or email jreynolds@kingcounty.gov if you have any questions.
Recognizing the Important Work in Olympia!
I was honored to have joined State Rep. Tina Orwall as HB 1134 – implementing the 988 behavioral health crisis response and suicide prevention system – was signed into law by Governor Jay Inslee! This level of response is critical as our behavioral health crisis continues to grow, affecting the lives of our loved ones, neighbors, and our communities as a whole. I'm excited for the opportunities to continue to ensure the 988 response and that of our first responders, who we’ve been meeting with regularly in District 3, is successful and that everyone has the resources they need. Thank you again for your work Representative Orwall, and thank you to the other Bill sponsors, Representatives Ramel, Berry, Callan, Leavitt, Macri, Simmons, Lekanoff, Su-Ling Gregerson, Thai, Stonier, Kloba, Bronoske, Doglio, Peterson, Caldier, Timmons, Reeves, Chopp, Paul, Davis, Riccelli, Fosse and Farivar.
