Our 2023 Council Grant Opportunities are Now Open!
March 2023
Dear Friend,
We’re already a quarter of the way through the year, and time is flying by so quickly – it feels like the year just started, but we’ve already engaged in so many important issues for our communities. We’ve been hard at work on behavioral health, environmental protections, supporting our creative economies and keeping our public safe!
As we continue to meet with our local nonprofit organizations, we recognize that there are many needs that often go unfulfilled. We want to ensure you have access to funding opportunities through our office available to local government and organizations in our District 3 community. The four grants are: (1) community service grants; (2) veterans service organization grants; (3) housing stability grants; and (4) get active stay active grants for youth or senior programs. Details about the grants can be found here or by clicking the button below, and applications are due May 1st. If you have any questions, please reach out to Robby.Paige@kingcounty.gov.
There is so much great work being done by our civic and non-profit organizations, our cities, County agencies and in our State Legislature that it leaves me excited to see what the rest of the year holds as we work together to ensure that our communities thrive!
All the best,
Council Briefings & Actions!
The Council has been working hard this month – here’s the work that matters most to District 3:
-
At the March Local Services and Land Use (LSLU) Committee we received a briefing on King County Emergency Management Plan from Director Brendan McCluskey on bringing forward the importance of partnership and community between the County and local jurisdictions, especially in times of emergency.
-
At our March Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting, we passed a motion adopting the King County 2023 Federal Legislative Agenda, emphasizing the interests of our King County residents and sharing them with our representatives in Washington D.C.
- In our Full Council Meeting, we approved the King County Metro Service Recovery Plan, as our transit and Council works together to focus on the reliability of transit and options that we have across our County.
If you are interested in joining us for a meeting to make a comment or just listen in, click on any of the links above that I am Chair or Vice Chair for, or any of these below: Full Council Meeting; Budget and Fiscal Management; Committee of the Whole; Government Accountability and Oversight; Employment and Administration; Labor Policy; Law, Justice, Health and Human Services; Local Services and Land Use; Transportation, Economy, and Environment; Regional Transit
Celebrating Women's History Month!
March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate women of all ages, all cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and from all walks of life. It’s also a chance to highlight the determination, creativity, and courage of women across the world.
Earlier this week, I was honored to join Councilmembers Jeanne Kohl-Welles and Claudia Balducci in sponsoring the 2023 Women’s History Month Panel – an event that I look forward to each year as it provides an important moment in time to recognize and celebrate the impact that women make on our society through their smarts, determination, creativity, and sometimes just sheer courage.
I also recently had the opportunity to speak with our King County TV team, to share what it’s like running for office and why more women should run. Check it out below!

Town Halls across District 3!
We are excited to host an in-person KC D3 Sammamish Town Hall on Thursday, April 6th at 6:30 PM at the Sammamish Library (825 228th Ave SE, Sammamish, WA 98075)! Join us to learn and share as we get to know each other and how we can work together to ensure that Sammamish has the best communities possible for all! We will be joined by Sammamish Mayor Kali Clark, Director Kate Becker - KC Creative Economies, Director Leo Flor - KC Behavioral Health and Director Warren Jimenez - KC Environmental Preservation! Space is limited, so click "Going" on the Facebook event and sign up for the event here so that we have all the needed seats and refreshments (kiddos welcome)! Questions? Call: 206-507-9860
It was wonderful to hear from our Skykomish residents as we visited a local non-profit in the town, Sky Artworks. Our guest speakers joined us to talk about emergency management services and our King County roads and bridges, including the Miller Bridge with some driven folks from the community. You can watch a recap of that Town Hall here!
Testifying at the State Legislature!
This session, the Washington State Legislature has been working on some critical bills that will help shape the future of our state. In order to represent the needs of our District 3 and King County residents, I had the opportunity to testify on behalf of three bills. Check out more details below along with videos of my testimonies!
HB 1355 - Property Tax Exemptions: This bill expands the qualifying income thresholds for the property tax exemption and deferral programs for low-income senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and veterans, which will ultimately provide property tax relief to many more of our residents.
HB 1134 - 988 Crisis Hotline: This bill addresses the “who to call” and “who responds” pieces of the crisis response system, and is the next step in implementing the 988 crisis hotline and building out a more robust crisis response system in Washington.
SB 5120 - Crisis Relief Centers: This legislation answers the critical call of “somewhere to go” for those facing behavioral health crises. It establishes 23-hour crisis relief centers as a new category of behavioral health facility to be able to provide services to voluntary clients, clients being brought in by first responders, and clients referred by the 988 behavioral health crisis system.
Keeping our Communities Safe!
I was grateful to have been invited to join the residents of Redmond Ridge and Novelty Hill in a meeting with dedicated members of the King County Sheriff's Office to address the recent rash of 20 burglaries and home invasions in the last 3 months. Our officers are aware of this organized burglary effort coming in from Canada and, though it is an ongoing investigation so they cannot share much, they are confident we will hear soon on media that they have been apprehended.
The officers shared both data and safety steps, such as developing block watches, increasing early evening neighborhood walks and social activities to show a presence, and Always Calling 911 for anything suspicious. Thank you to the Redmond Ridge Association for convening this gathering and thank you Major Pingrey, Captain Horvath, and to all the officers who took the time to be with the Community to listen and share!
