A Great Start to the New Year!
January 2023
Dear Friend,
I am excited to begin my second year of service for the great residents of District 3! We are off to a strong start in this first month with our 2023 priorities defined and my committee leadership and participation roles set, always and ever toward ensuring that each of our communities have the opportunity to thrive - now and into the future!
Our Top Three in 2023:
-
Environment and farm preservation: Protecting our water, land and forests while strengthening the opportunities for our local farms to thrive.
-
Behavioral Health access: Access to behavioral health resources and services for those struggling with Alzheimer’s, Autism, depression, anxiety and more.
-
Economic vitality and creative economies: Strengthening support for our small businesses and arts organizations so they thrive throughout D3
Please consider joining in these conversations and efforts with us for the focus within your own community! And, as always, if you’d like to talk about anything please reach out for a cup of coffee in person, by Teams/Zoom, or by phone or email! Conversations with you are what help me learn about what is most important to our communities.
All the best,
Council Appointments & Actions!
I am excited to share that I have been appointed as Chair of King County Council's Local Services and Land Use (LSLU) Committee once again. In addition, I have been appointed as Chair of the Regional Transit Committee (RTC), Vice Chair of Law, Justice, Health and Human Services (LJHHS) and Vice Chair of the King County Flood Control District Board. It is going to be a busy, great year and I couldn’t be more excited!
The Council is off to a strong start – here are just a few highlights for January:
-
We referred the Snoqualmie Final General Sewer Plan to the Local Services and Land Use Committee – This is the first step to getting it passed in council to get to work strengthening the infrastructure in Snoqualmie!
-
Our LSLU committee appointed Elise Montanana, Samuel Hendrix, Didem Pierson, and Ruth Harvey to the Emergency Management Advisory Committee to ensure resident safety for wildfires, floods, and extreme weather.
-
We passed an ordinance to place a “Crisis Care Centers Levy” on the April ballot. If approved, this will:
-
Build 5 new regional care crisis centers throughout King County
-
Reinstate 111 residential treatment beds for behavioral health
-
Support and retain Social Service workforce through career pathway creation and investment in equitable wages

Council Proclamations of Support!
(Left) Council Ordinance supporting uniform initiative brought forward by Girl Scout Troop 41653; (Center) Council Proclamation recognizing Jan. as Martin Luther King Jr month in King County; (Right) Council Proclamation recognizing Jan. as Human Trafficking Awareness Month in King County.
Along with all the other areas we’ve had the opportunity to recognize important work in our community, which includes the following:
-
The Girl Scouts from Troop #41653 provided public comment on ordinance 2022-4029 to promote gender equity in uniforms for King County Employees, which was an initiative they worked with us on for over a year and a half. The Girl Scout in me is proud of their civic engagement and leadership!
-
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Month was recognized on January 10th, and on January 12th, we hosted a virtual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The theme was “Truth, Light, and Hope” raising Dr. King’s ever-present question: “What have you done for others?”. Read the Proclamation here.
-
Human Trafficking Awareness Month was recognized on January 24th, where we also acknowledged our debt of gratitude to the organizations and individuals who work tirelessly to bring awareness, resources and support to our community members who are victims and survivors of the human trafficking industry. Read the Proclamation here.
-
A Proclamation on Antisemitism was presented at the January 31st Full Council Meeting, where all 9 Councilmembers denounced antisemitism, hate and bias in the strongest terms against our Jewish community members.

Survey Results
In September of 2022 we distributed a District-wide survey and 2,664 residents responded! Together we now see how we can work together for shared priorities!
Check out the link below for an interactive view of the data. You can see the breakdown of by city, age, and topic. We've learned so much from everyone’s responses and together they inform our decision-making in District 3 – now it’s time to get to work!
Grant Opportunities in the New Year!
Do you know of an impactful organization that's looking for funding? Our District 3 Team has resources for you! Every month, we share a Grants Newsletter that highlights upcoming grant opportunities over the next few months, and there are several grant opportunities that are available now! Investing in our local non-profit organizations and supporting innovative ideas through funding is critical to help ensure that each of our communities are able to thrive, now and into the future!
We are also excited to share a funding opportunity that will be awarded to an organization to support an Art Therapy Behavioral Health Pilot project that works with an ethnically or culturally diverse community. The goal of the pilot project is to explore whether an Art Therapy approach helps to improve cognitive functioning, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and/or support recovery!
If you are part of a non-profit organization that is interested in learning more about this opportunity, please email osman.salahuddin@kingcounty.gov.
