Stay Informed, Stay Engaged in the Northeast Recycling and Transfer Station (NERTS) Project

The Northeast Recycling and Transfer Station Project team is sending occasional newsletters to keep you informed and engaged in the project, including alerting you to ways you can help shape project decisions. Some information will also be related to the many recycling and environmental services we currently offer to the people we serve in King County. Please visit www.kingcounty.gov/northeast to learn more about the project.

To request this newsletter in alternate formats, please contact the Solid Waste Division Customer Service Desk at 206-477-4466 or TTY 711.

Two upcoming Scoping Meeting opportunities this week to learn more about the project and submit your comments

To meet the growing need for recycling and waste disposal services, and to support regional goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, King County's Solid Waste Division is planning a new modern transfer station in northeast King County. The new station will replace the aging Houghton Transfer Station in Kirkland, which is nearly 60 years old and lacks many services people want.

On November 3, King County Solid Waste began the formal scoping process for this project. As part of this process, we are offering in-person and virtual meetings for you to participate in as the County develops its draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). This process will evaluate three action alternatives as well as a no-action alternative for the new station.

The meetings are an opportunity to learn more about the project, meet the project team, and make formal comments on the site alternatives that will be studied in the EIS. It is also your opportunity to tell us what is important to you, and what you think the project team should consider during our analysis.

King County to reschedule Dec. 1 public meeting on the Northeast Recycling and Transfer Station Project in Kirkland

Due to concerns about icy roads and potentially hazardous driving conditions, King County’s Solid Waste Division postponed the Dec. 1 public meeting on the Northeast Recycling and Transfer Station at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland. The meeting is in the process of being rescheduled and a new date planned for early January will be announced soon.
