Today marks King County’s first official Indigenous Peoples’ Day. In 2020, the King County Council took action on an ordinance sponsored by Councilmember Claudia Balducci to establish the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a day dedicated to service and learning. Today, take the opportunity to deepen your knowledge about our nation’s and region’s histories, Indigenous heritage and culture, and the important contributions of Indigenous people in both the county and our nation. To learn more about this holiday and it’s history, see this article.

King County is dedicated to honoring Indigenous peoples’ history and taking steps to undo institutional and systemic racist practices and policies. I am very pleased to have supported the legislation and to celebrate this special day in our history. I hope you find a way to celebrate as well as to stay safe throughout this long weekend. All the best,
