This week, the King County Council proclaimed October Disability Employment Awareness Month. When we reflect on the history of civil rights movements, the disability rights movement is often overlooked, but the struggle for equal treatment and opportunity for people with disabilities is central to making our society more just and equitable. Part of empowering people with disabilities to live independent lives is ensuring they have access to good jobs and that they are respected in the workplace for their contributions.

Celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day in King County
On Monday, October 10, King County will recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day for the first time as an official observed and paid holiday for King County employees. As a result, most King County government offices will be closed. All offices will be back on a normal schedule the following day. Some other notes about King County services:
I encourage everyone to take time on Monday to celebrate the rich heritage, culture, contributions, and strength of local and regional American Indian, Alaska Native, and Indigenous communities. Let us also use the day to reflect on our nation’s painful history, and the truth: that we live on – and unjustly benefit from – the colonized ancestral lands and traditional territories of the Coast Salish people.
