I was pleased to join Diana Giraldo, WTS Puget Sound/Seattle Chapter President, and Kate Elliott, Chapter Vice-President, for the award presentation
On Tuesday, I was honored to be named 2022 Woman of the Year by the WTS Puget Sound Chapter for how my work has advanced women and the reputation and credibility of women in transportation. WTS is a forum for discussing transportation trends and projects and highlighting women in the transportation field. It provides critical mentorship and support for the next generation of women transportation professionals.
Throughout my career, I have benefitted from the mentorship and guidance of strong women leaders in transportation, so this award is especially meaningful to me. When women are part of designing and implementing our transit system, it works better for everyone. I am committed to doing my part to lift the next generation of women leaders in transportation.
Supporting Redmond's new senior center
Since the King County Council districts were redrawn last year, I have been proud to welcome new areas of Redmond into District 6. That includes the site of the future Redmond Senior and Community Center, which will replace the former senior center and expand to serve the entire community with cultural arts, events, recreation experiences, and gathering spaces.
On Tuesday, I joined my Council colleagues in approving $500,000 for the new Senior and Community Center as part of a Parks levy grant package of over $8.3 million for parks capital and open space projects. I am thrilled to support a project that will serve seniors, along with the whole Redmond community.
Let’s make Health through Housing successful in Kirkland
King County and the City of Kirkland will host a community meeting on Monday about the permanent supportive housing that will be opening at the former La Quinta Inn in Kirkland as part of the regional Health through Housing initiative. The conversation will focus on upcoming implementation decisions, including a safety plan, referral process for tenants, and ongoing communication plans. The meeting will be held virtually on Monday, May 9th from 5:30-7:00pm.
I have heard many suggestions from constituents about how to make permanent supportive housing work in our community and ensure it has a positive impact, both for the residents who will live there and the surrounding neighbors. This meeting is an opportunity to discuss and develop those ideas. I’m confident that we can work together to create relationships, plans, and processes to make this project a success.
Updates and answers about the new Northeast Recycling and Transfer Station
King County’s Solid Waste Division will host a virtual open house next week for the new Northeast Recycling and Transfer Station that is being planned to serve northeast King County. Four sites in Kirkland and Woodinville are being considered for the modern, more eco-friendly recycling and garbage facility, which will replace the 50-year-old Houghton Recycling Center. Join the Solid Waste Division on Thursday, May 12th at 6:30pm to learn more and provide your input.
