Announcing Our New King County Sheriff

Your Update on What's Happening at the King County Council  

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This week, after a nation-wide search, King County Executive Dow Constantine appointed Patti Cole-Tindall, who has been serving as our interim Sheriff, as the next King County Sheriff.

Patti Cole-Tindall has deep roots in King County and invaluable knowledge of our challenges and unique dynamics, and importantly, has been able to build consensus and boost morale during her tenure as interim Sheriff. Now, in her new role, Sheriff Cole-Tindall is in a critical position to address the alarming erosion of public safety that we are witnessing — including record levels of violent crime, a surge in shootings, and a drug trade that is fueling skyrocketing fatal overdoses, all during a time of a severe deputy shortage. This escalating lawlessness hurts us all — and we have heard from King County residents that what they want is a stronger Sheriff’s Office and more law enforcement in their communities. This is a big task, and a monumentally important one.

I look forward to continuing a productive relationship with Sheriff Patti Cole-Tindall and will partner with and support her however I can as she rebuilds public safety in King County.

Dunn’s Cannabis Taskforce Proposal Passes Committee

This week, my legislation to create a Cannabis Safety Taskforce was approved by the Law, Justice, Health and Human Services Committee and will now be sent to the full Council for a final vote.

There has been a recent slate of violent, armed robberies at cannabis dispensaries across the region—including two in the district I represent, which both resulted in fatal shootings. We must take action to provide protections to the businesses and communities impacted by these crimes, and to make it clear that these brazen robberies will not be tolerated. I am grateful to my colleagues for their support.

King County Council Approves $5.5 Million in Grants for District 9 Parks Projects

On Tuesday, the King County Council approved the first round of King County Parks Levy Grants, which included:

• $1.2 million for the Enumclaw Aquatic Center renovations
• $500,000 for Jenkins Creek improvements
• $100,000 to advance the design of a new Covington/Maple Valley Aquatic Center
• $2.7 million to modernize the Hazen High School Pool
• $481,000 for picnic floats and ADA access at Gene Coulon Park
• $500,000 for the Cross-Town Trail at Lake Boren in Newcastle

I am pleased to see these funds put to work to expand opportunities for District 9 residents to get outside and stay active, and will continue to work for investments that benefit our communities!
