Start Of A New Council Year

Dear Neighbor,

It’s great to be back at work on the King County Council and to share with all of you some of my priorities for the next four years:

  • We need to renew our Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy—and expand it to include new dedicated funding for mental health services.
  • We need to come together to meet the needs people and salmon, tribes and cities —taking aggressive steps to restore the health of the Green River.
  • We need to protect our Growth Management Act and implement it to meet our responsibilities to housing, to our climate, and to our economy.
  • And, we need to reform policing and our criminal justice system to root out institutional racism and improve accountability—all while improving public safety.

In 2022, we will face the challenge of continuing to respond to the impacts of COVID-19 but without the large amount of federal funding that we have received over the last two years.  The County has been able to provide much-needed support – whether it be food and rental assistance, funding to address digital equity for those who lack access to the internet or support for local businesses who struggled in the economic downturn – but the funding for all these programs came from the federal government and we are not expecting any future large influx of federal dollars. We will all need to work together as we navigate this new situation and I hope you will continue to share your thoughts with me moving forward.

Changes To District 5 Boundaries

Every ten years, using the most recent Census data, Council districts are redrawn by a non-partisan committee of five community members. Due to the changes made by the committee, District 5 no longer includes Burien and some parts of south east Kent but gains area in Renton and Tukwila.

I am excited to work with my new constituents and will continue to be a strong advocate for all of South King County.

A copy of the new District 5 map is provided below.

Local Leader, Kendrick Glover, Wins 2022 Larry Gossett Service Award

Congratulations to my good friend Kendrick Glover, Executive Director of G.E.M., on being awarded with the 2022 Larry Gossett Service Award. This award recognizes an individual or organization that has made significant contributions to the areas of racial equity, social justice, and/or human rights.

I nominated Kendrick for this award because of his leadership and tireless effort to provide a better future for our youth.  Kendrick has transformed the lives of BIPOC youth here in South King County through compassionate community mentoring and restorative justice programs. He has created positive pathways to education, employment and healthy relationships – truly exemplifying the meaning of this award.
