The past year: VSHSL in 2021

As 2021 comes to a close, the VSHSL is thankful for our funded partners and their unwavering dedication to serving King County's communities. VSHSL's partners continued to support the people they serve through the COVID-19 pandemic: providing emergency support, assisting with vaccination efforts and for some, transitioning back into in-person services later in the year.

Reminder: Translation and interpretation services for VSHSL-funded providers

Are you in need of interpretation services? Do you have materials you want to translate into multiple languages? VSHSL can support VSHSL-funded entities in translating program materials and providing interpreter services to VSHSL clients to help meet the needs of communities you serve or wish to better reach. Online and in-person services are available. Services include those for persons who are hearing or vision-impaired.

Neighbors helping neighbors: Seniors aging well at home

Northwest Neighbors Network (NNN) is one of eight communities funded by the Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy (VSHSL) to create or enhance a Senior Village. NNN was honored by the North Urban Human Services Alliance at their 2021 Human Services Awards. NNN received an award for Outstanding Human Services Program for demonstrating a significant contribution to the health and welfare of the North King County community and has supported and advocated for a strong and accessible health and human services system, strengthening the community through their initiative and leadership.

A virtual showcase of veteran-created art

Path with Art launched their Veteran Cohort with their first Vets Engaged award in 2019 and has since tripled in growth, supporting over 160 veterans so far in 2021 with free, year-round multidisciplinary arts classes, workshops and exhibitions/performances. Path with Art recently was honored with a Washington State Arts Commission (ArtsWA) Governor’s Arts & Heritage Luminary Award for their contributions and service to the veteran community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Apply now for a Vets Engaged grant

Vets Engaged is seeking new applicants and wants to hear your ideas to help bridge the civilian-military divide. By awarding grants of $10,000 for individuals and organizations to create free community-building events and activities, Vets Engaged seeks to build, strengthen and sustain social networks between veterans and their neighbors.

New Funding Opportunity from the American Rescue Plan Act

The King County Department of Community and Human Services is now accepting applications to fund senior centers in King County. This program aims to stabilize and support senior centers in response to the COVID-19 public health emergency. Funding is provided by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and subject to federal restrictions and reporting requirements. Applications are due by February 2, 2022 by 5pm.

A virtual information session to discuss questions related to this funding opportunity will be held on January 4, 2022, 10am - 12pm. Register for the information session.

Opportunity for language access providers

King County launched a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for language access providers interested in working with King County departments to deliver any of the following services:

1. Verbal language interpretation
2. American Sign Language (ASL) and other sign languages
3. Communication Access Real-Time Transcription (CART) captioning

Vendors who receive a contract from this RFQ will be added to a King County-wide roster of approved language access providers.
