Recognizing our public health leaders for their work to fight the COVID-19 pandemic
Click on image above to watch the KCTV tribute to the work of Patty Hayes & Dr. Jeff Duchin
Earlier this week, the King County Council awarded former Public Health Director Patty Hayes and Public Health Officer Dr. Jeff Duchin the MLK Medal for Distinguished Service for their tireless work fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to Director Hayes and Dr. Duchin, our COVID response was based on science, on data and analysis, and on equity. Together, they gave us hope and health and literally saved lives. I cannot express the depth of my gratitude to each of them, and to the amazing Public Health - Seattle & King County team who continue to fight the pandemic.
Supporting Community Homes with a retired van

Each year, the King County Council Van Donation Program allows councilmembers to donate retired, but still useable, vanpool vans to local nonprofits that serve seniors, low-income people, youth, or people with disabilities. This year, one of the organizations I donated a van to is Community Homes. Community Homes provides community-based housing for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, serving more than 50 residents in Adult Family Home and Shared Living models across East King County. They will be using the van to transport residents to work, recreation, and social activities, giving their residents more opportunities to grow and experience independence in the community. It’s always exciting to be able to provide this kind of immediate, direct support to organizations doing amazing things in our community, like Community Homes.
Service opportunity: help preserve King County’s open space
The King County Conservation Futures Advisory Committee (CFAC) is seeking new members! Each year, governmental agencies and qualified nonprofits can apply for King County Conservation Futures tax levy (CFT) funds to purchase or preserve open space lands, including natural areas, passive recreation parks, urban greenspaces, trails, community gardens, farms, and forests. The CFAC reviews applications and recommends the allocation of CFT funds to the King County Executive and Council, which makes the final funding awards.
If you have a passion for the outdoors and are looking for a highly-involved and hands-on committee, please reach out to my community liaison, Madeline Cavazos, at 206-477-7774 or madeline.cavazos@kingcounty.gov.
