Your Update on What's Happening at the King County Council

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I'm very pleased to share a piece of good news with you today. For many months now, I've been working to improve the safety conditions around the King County Courthouse. An encampment in the neighboring City Hall Park had been threatening the safety of Courthouse visitors and preventing members of the public from accessing the building. The continuing crime, violence, and even homicide originating from the City Hall Park encampment was creating a dangerous environment for not only for jurors and Courthouse employees, but all those who lived in the encampment.

This week, legislation I co-sponsored with Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles to begin steps to acquire City Hall Park from the City of Seattle was approved in the Council's Committee of the Whole. This show of support from the majority of my colleagues on the King County Council means that the legislation is likely to be fully approved at the October 19th Council meeting.

I am excited by this progress, and will continue to work for a permanent solution to the safety concerns around the King County Courthouse and to bring City Hall Park back into public use.

All my best,
