Get the Shot of a Lifetime in June

Shot of a Lifetime

Yesterday, to encourage more Washingtonians to get their COVID-19 vaccine shots, Gov. Jay Inslee announced that the Washington State Lottery will hold a “Shot of a Lifetime” giveaway series in June, featuring cash prizes totaling $2 million, sports tickets (Mariners, Kraken, OL Reign, Seahawks, Sounders and Storm), tuition assistance and more.

How can you become eligible? Get vaccinated! All winners will be drawn from the Washington State Department of Health immunization database. People who were previously vaccinated are also eligible.

Pride Month

I am so happy to join my King County Council colleagues in standing with our LGBTQ+ family, friends, colleagues and neighbors with love, support, respect during PRIDE month!

Looking for a socially distanced outdoor event to celebrate Pride this weekend? Tomorrow, Centro Cultural Mexicano in Redmond will host the opening reception for Rainbow on the Eastside, the first gallery show for LGBTQIA artists living on the Eastside.

King County Council passes facial recognition technology ban

Earlier this week the King County Council unanimously adopted legislation that prohibits County agencies from using facial recognition technology. This means that agencies, such as the Sheriff’s Office and Metro Transit, will now not be allowed to purchase, install or use facial recognition technology.

I appreciated the robust debate around this timely and complicated legislation. Ultimately, after listening closely to all sides, I voted to pursue a protective principle and ban use of the technology until we know we can use it safely and achieve its beneficial uses while minimizing the risk of potentially harmful uses, especially when large amounts of personal data are being collected.

Note, this legislation does not prohibit other jurisdictions, such as cities, or private companies from using the technology; it only applies to King County government operations.
