Last month the King County Council approved the Climate Action Toolkit, which I sponsored, and this week the amended toolkit was made available for cities and towns to take action to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
The idea for the Climate Action Toolkit originated from conversations with District 6 residents who wanted to find ways to act locally to address the global threat of climate change. This toolkit empowers jurisdictions in King County to maximize efforts to fight climate change. Now that it's available for use, I urge community members and my colleagues in every city in King County to take advantage of this tool to do their part to combat this crisis.

Best Starts for Kids Levy renewal legislation moving forward
This week the renewal legislation for the 6-year Best Starts for Kids Levy passed out of the Committee of the Whole. I was a strong supporter of the original levy six years ago and I am enthusiastic for its renewal today. This levy makes a transformational investment in a future where every child has what they need to be happy, healthy, safe and thriving. As we emerge out of the pandemic, it’s more critical than ever that we invest in the physical and mental health of our children.
The legislation is up for passage at the April 20th King County Council meeting. If it is approved, the renewal levy will be on the August 2021 primary ballot.

With cases on the rise, we’re not in the clear yet
The good news that 46% of King County residents have received at least one vaccination shot and 26.5% of us are fully vaccinated is tempered by the rise in COVID-19 cases. The increasing rate of new cases and hospitalizations in younger adults, gives us all a stark reminder that we’re not in the clear yet.
More shots in arms will help us beat the pandemic, but the virus is spreading more quickly than we can vaccinate. Remember, whether you’re vaccinated or not, to beat this pandemic it’s critical we continue to deploy best practices: wear well-fitted masks, keep indoor areas well-ventilated, practice hand hygiene and maintain physical distancing. And, get vaccinated when you’re eligible.
