I have watched with anger and sorrow the increase in violence toward Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. In King County and across the U.S. there have been major upticks in acts of violence against these communities in the last year, often triggered by false beliefs that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are responsible for spreading COVID-19.
This week, six women of Asian descent were killed by a gunman in Atlanta. While these horrific acts of violence remain under investigation, they have naturally caused fear, anger and extreme anxiety among our AAPI community members that the targeting and scapegoating already seen across our nation has taken a terrifying turn for the worse.
Yesterday, I joined many from across the Eastside to stand against this hate and in support of our AAPI neighbors. As our community continues to respond in support, I remain committed to our work to make a more just and equitable county where everyone is safe.

Recognizing our transit operators
This week, we celebrated transit operators for all they do. Our transit operators are always indispensable, but this year during the COVID-19 crisis they have literally been providing a lifeline for so many in our communities. If you’re out and about, be sure to give a wave and a smile to a transit operator and say thank you.
