Now showing on King County TV: closed captions for all meetings

KCTV banner

Making King County meetings and deliberations more accessible to constituents means more people can engage in our civic life.

I’m so happy to report that we’re making progress to make King County more accessible to all. As a part of this year’s budget I advocated for funding to enable King County TV to launch this new service after hearing from stakeholders who encouraged closed captioning to promote greater accessibility. Beginning this week, King County TV is providing closed captions for meetings on its live stream and Comcast Channels.

This latest King County accessibility improvement follows our work in 2019 to “Loop” the King County Council Chambers for people who wear hearing aids. I’m proud we’re continuing to make improvements, but our work isn’t complete. As always, I welcome additional input on how to make the King County Council and its work even more accessible to county residents.

To access captions on King County TV, enable “CC” on your computer or television screen. Note: the captions are computer generated and there will be typos. If you see misspellings you can note the date and time and send King County TV feedback here.  This feedback will help build the system’s vocabulary.

The new COVID-19 variant is here: what you need to know

coronavirus

On Saturday, the Washington State Department of Health along with the Snohomish Health District and the UW Medicine Virology Lab, announced that the B.1.1.7 variant (often referred to the UK coronavirus variant) of COVID-19 has been found in our state.

As we’ve heard from our public health experts, this news was expected but the confirmed arrival of the new variant provides another reminder that we must continue to do everything we can to slow the spread of the disease: wear masks, physical distance, implement good ventilation and stay home when possible.

Read the latest Public Health blog post on the steps we can take to respond to the new variant >>>
