Following Wednesday’s shocking insurrection at the US Capitol, I am thankful that here at the King County Council we can work together across ideological lines to get things done for you, our constituents.
I’m proud of the King County Council’s accomplishments for county residents in 2020 under unprecedented conditions and I thank my Council colleagues for unanimously reelecting me on Tuesday as chair of the King County Council for our work ahead in 2021.
I am honored to lead the Council as we continue to respond to and recover from the pandemic. In 2021, we will recover and build toward a better, more equitable future with economic opportunity and improved public and mental health for all. I hope you will join us in coming together and seizing opportunity as we take up this important work.

Accelerating community COVID-19 vaccination programs in King County
Today I joined King County Executive Constantine, the Director of Public Health - Seattle & King County and colleagues on the Council to announce that the county will provide funding to speed up COVID-19 vaccinations.
The $7 million investment will be used to create two high-volume community vaccination sites, plus five mobile teams, so that as many residents as possible will be quickly, efficiently and equitably vaccinated.
The light at the end of the tunnel has finally started to appear in the form of very effective vaccines that are now beginning to be available. We in local government are stepping up again today to do everything we can to make vaccines available to those most in need throughout King County.

State issues a new roadmap for recovery & vaccine distribution information
This week, new COVID-19 recovery and vaccine information from the State of Washington was released. First, Governor Inslee issued his phased recovery plan, called “Healthy Washington — Roadmap to Recovery.” This new recovery system aims to safely ease some restrictions while also maintaining crucial hospital capacity, ensuring care for Washingtonians that need it and paving the way for economic recovery.

Second, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) released new information on vaccine distribution and estimated dates for when people should expect to receive their vaccines (note, this timeline will vary county-by-county, depending on many factors).
Finally, DOH is piloting its Phase Finder tool, an online self-assessment to help people find out if they are eligible for vaccination under Phase 1a. Phase Finder will also provide:
- confirmation of eligibility that can be shown at a vaccination site, and
- a link to a list of available sites for vaccination.
Phase Finder currently only covers those eligible for phase 1a but will be open to other priority groups as the state moves to new phases of vaccine distribution.
