Your Update on What's Happening at the King County Council

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

With the unfortunate departure of SPD Chief Carmen Best, it's clear that law and order in Seattle is crumbling. Indiscriminate cuts to the Seattle Police Department were the latest stressor that resulted in the resignation of Seattle's chief law enforcement officer amidst a crisis.

Elected leaders--including myself and my colleagues at the King County Council--are facing significant political pressure to defund police departments. I want to assure you that the safety of District 9 residents remains my top priority. While I believe there is room for thoughtful, constructive police reform, no community has ever become safer with less law enforcement.

To District 9 residents: I will first and foremost fight for your right to safety—for yourself and for your families. The vast majority of you deeply appreciate the protection and service of your King County Sheriff Officers and want to know someone will answer when you call 911.

To our King County Sheriff Officers: I will continue stand with you. You put your lives on the line every day to protect others, often going above and beyond to help people on the worst day of their life. You are there for District 9 communities in times of emergency, crisis, and even violence—when people need you most. Thank you for service.

Above all, I will continue to fight to preserve the safety of families and communities in District 9.

Thank you,
