“Good Eggs” Community Forum with Councilmember Girmay Zahilay
Prior to COVID-19, I regularly hosted “Good Eggs” Breakfast meetings once a month to encourage regional dialogue and collaboration among local elected officials and community leaders from South King County. In keeping with public safety guidelines, I invited our newest King County Councilmember, Girmay Zahilay, to join us for a virtual community forum tomorrow, July 22nd, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Every Councilmember has taken a different path to the King County Council, but Girmay’s journey from Sudan to Seattle is special, and I hope you will join us to hear his unique perspective during these challenging times.
Governor Announces New Limits on Social Gatherings in Phase 3 Counties
As COVID-19 cases surge across the state, Governor Inslee and Secretary of Health John Wiesman announced a new limit on social gatherings and a ban on live entertainment across the state. Under the new Safe Start phase limits, the number of individuals allowed in social gatherings during Phase 3 will be reduced from 50 people to 10 people. Counties in Phase 2, including King County, may continue to have social gatherings of up to five people. All live entertainment, indoor or outdoor, is prohibited statewide. This includes drive-in concerts, comedy clubs and music in restaurants. Drive-in movies are still allowed.
The orders took effect on July 20th after the rolling 7-day average number of new cases hit 629 cases per day in Washington. There has been a particular surge among young adults, which is a shift from early in the pandemic. You can read more about it here.

Weekly King County Health Update: Fall Prevention Resources
Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for people aged 15 to 44, the third leading cause of death in people aged 45 to 64, and the fifth leading cause of death in people aged 65+ in Washington state.
Falls are a serious type of unintentional injury, and your risk only increases as you become older. Two-thirds of seniors who experience a fall will fall again within six months. 1 in 3 seniors (65+) falls at least once a year, and 1 in 40 of those will be hospitalized. Only half of those hospitalized will survive the year.
In this time of decreased mobility and social interactions, many of us are spending more time at home, and it is important to note that 60% of fatal falls occur at home.
However, there are many things that you can do to reduce your risk of falling. Here are four core strategies that you can follow:
- Home modification and identifying fall hazards in your home
- Exercise, physical activity
- Vision care
- Medication management
If you believe that you or a loved one may be especially at risk of falling, consider enrolling in the One Step Ahead Fall Prevention Program. To enroll or receive more information, you can call to leave a voicemail at 206-263-8544 and a staff will return your call, or email FallPrevention.EMS@kingcounty.gov.
