Your Update on What's Happening at the King County Council  

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This year, we are all celebrating Independence Day a little differently than usual. With nearly all public firework shows cancelled, it’s important to know what’s legal and to be extra vigilant about safety. I’ve included a review of fireworks laws below.

Coronavirus cases have been on the uptick, so as you celebrate this weekend, please take care to maintain a 6 foot distance from others and wear a mask when indoors. As always—if you’re feeling sick, stay home.

Independence Day weekend is happening during a challenging time in our country. This is a time for us all to reflect on the principles that our country was founded on and remember that we are united in our common identity: Americans who are still striving for a more perfect union.

Dunn Delivers Face Masks across District 9

This week, I’ve been making deliveries of free face masks to community organizations and cities across District 9. Check Your Fireworks Regulations

✔️ Firework regulations vary city by city, but please note that all cities within District 9 except the cities of Black Diamond, Covington, and Enumclaw have laws banning the discharge of fireworks within city limits.

✔️ For those who live in unincorporated areas, fireworks are legal but there are still restrictions--including that fireworks may be discharged only from 9 AM to midnight on July 4th. You can review the full list of County rules here. 

✔️ Be aware that there are extra King County Sheriff patrols on the lookout for firework violations. I worked with my colleagues to prioritize funding for emphasis patrols in unincorporated King County because of concerns I’ve heard from residents in unincorporated communities.

✔️ If you are setting off your own fireworks, please make safe choices for those around you and be considerate of the impact to your neighborhood.

Increase in COVID-19 Cases in King County

The daily average of COVID-19 cases in King County has more than doubled in the last 2 weeks. Recent cases are from all areas of the county, with the largest increase in new cases in young adults and Seattle residents. As you celebrate Independence Day this weekend, please be safe!
