Statewide Face Covering Requirement Issued

mandatory masks

This afternoon Governor Inslee announced a statewide, enforceable order that requires people wear face coverings to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Individuals are required to wear a face covering indoors in public places such as stores, offices and restaurants and outdoors when staying 6 feet apart from others is not possible.

The statewide order does include exemptions, such as children under 5 (though it's encouraged to have children ages 3-5 wear a covering if possible) and those who are deaf or hard of hearing or those with specific health conditions. In some situations people can remove face coverings, such as when seated and properly distanced from others at a restaurant or when recreating alone.

This requirement comes as certain parts of Washington state are experiencing significant growth in cases of COVID-19. It is stronger than the King County Public Health Officer's directive made on May 18, which urged but did not require the use of face coverings in public settings.

The statewide requirement goes into effect Friday, June 26. Learn more about the new requirement from the Washington State Coronavirus Response page.

Remember, as King County continues to gradually and cautiously reopen our economy, it’s more important than ever to wash our hands, wear masks and maintain physical distancing. These indispensable health practices will help limit the spread and make our journey to recover a one-way trip.

Stay home and spread the word!
