Raped, Then Jailed: The Risks of Prosecution for Falsely Reporting Sexual Assault

Recorded Webinar, Available Anytime

Sexual assault victims have often faced sources of bias, based on unjustified suspicions that their report is a false allegation. This webinar focuses on the scenario where victims summon the courage to report a sexual assault, only to be disbelieved, mistreated, and later charged (often erroneously) with false reporting or associated crimes such as obstruction of justice, interfering with law enforcement, or providing false statements. The presentation will detail how these scenarios unfold, highlighting factors that distinguish an interview conducted with a victim versus a suspect in a criminal investigation, and we document how this can result in a false confession. We then conclude with a discussion of how this injustice can be prevented, by following recommended practices for sexual assault investigations and victim interviews.

Tools for Addressing Gender Bias in Sexual Assault Response

Webinar, available anytime

EVAWI offers a number of resources designed to explore the phenomenon of gender bias, both explicit (conscious) and implicit (unconscious), and the resulting stereotypes and attitudes that can influence the professional response to, and investigation of, sexual assault. In this brief 30-minute webinar, we will offer a tour of these resources to help identify the presence of gender bias, mitigate its influence, and address key questions about how bias can disadvantage (or advantage) the victim and/or suspect.

Working with Victims with Intellectual Disabilities- A Case Study

Studies show that our population with intellectual disabilities suffer abuse at a rate much greater than those without intellectual disabilities. These especially vulnerable victims are in need of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) familiar with their specific needs and abilities. During this webinar, we will look at those studies and use two case studies that highlight the differing needs and abilities of these particular victims. You will also learn about investigating and prosecuting cases involving this population of victims and using expert witnesses to present these cases to a jury.
