October News Update and Upcoming Events

Protecting and Preserving Our Environment

Councilmember Dave Upthegrove and Mayor Jonathan Chicquette

This month, I announced that Des Moines, Kent, Normandy Park, Tukwila, and SeaTac will receive grants for land conservation and restoration projects. The grants are funded through King County’s Conservation Futures program, which is dedicated to purchasing open space lands and conservation easements across the county.

These cities will use the money to expand parks, preserve and restore forest and shoreline habitats and more. To learn more about these projects, visit this link.

Ensuring Better Access to Public Transportation

Our transit system is more effective when residents can easily and safely access it. Last week, the Sound Transit Board of Directors awarded more than $40 million in grants for cities and public agencies to improve bike and pedestrian connections to transit stations. The grant is part of the Sound Transit System Access Program, which aims to help cities and public agencies increase access to public transit services.

Renton, Des Moines, Kent, SeaTac, and Tukwila all received grants for projects, which include improving and expanding sidewalks near Link light rail stations, making pedestrian crossings at stations safer for commuters and more. Learn about the projects here:

What Happened in September?

Kent YMCA

In September, I celebrated the opening of the new Kent YMCA with volunteers and staff. Check out the facility and enjoy fitness classes, events, and community services.

I also spent time with the Environmental Science Center at Seahurst Park as they inaugurated their newest class of “salmon heroes” in Renton. I am proud that the King County Council will continue to fund this program and additional educational opportunities to teach kids about habitat restoration.
