Dear Neighbors,

On Saturday, August 17, there was a small fire in Area 8 at the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill. Division employees took quick action to contain and extinguish the fire, and a preliminary inspection indicates that neither the liner, environmental controls, nor the integrity of the new disposal cell was affected. The incident posed no risk to public or environmental health.

Around 7:15 p.m. an Operations employee who was onsite spotted smoke coming from Area 8. The worker immediately called 911 before enlisting the assistance of other landfill operations personnel, who promptly responded with a water truck to douse the emerging flames.

Eastside Fire and Rescue arrived at the scene with three engines around 7:30 p.m., and the fire was completely extinguished by 8 p.m.

Operations staff remained at the site through the night. Regulatory agencies including Public Health Seattle-King County and the Washington State Department of Ecology have been notified of the incident.

The landfill is staffed by division employees 24-hours a day, seven days a week. As a reminder, neighbors who feel there is an emergency at the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill should immediately call 911.
